Posted on 05/01/2024
Civics FairOn April 30, the Johnson City High School conducted its 1st Annual Citizens in Action Civics Fair.
The event allowed participants to engage with high school students enrolled in the high school's new elective class, "Citizens in Action," to discuss the students' civic research. During the school year, the students worked in groups to research community issues of interest with residents, businesses, and political leaders to better understand their chosen focus issues. Topics ranged from mental health, factors contributing to sports disparities between boys and girls, the accessibility of housing in Johnson City and Binghamton, and more. Students who successfully completed their project will be awarded the new NYS Seal of Civic Readiness.

We thank Johnson City Mayor Martin Meaney for attending, as well as representatives from NYS Representative Donna Lupardo's office and U.S. Representative Mark Molinaro's office. Finally, we thank our JC families, school administrators and teachers for learning about our students' research.

The class is taught collaboratively by English Teacher Dr. Donna Geetter and Social Studies Teacher Judy Gleason.
