Elementary-middle school reopening message
Posted on 01/08/2025
CampusDear Wildcats,

This message is to inform you that following the minor fire incident in the middle school Family and Consumer Science classroom on Sunday, January 5, all necessary safety precautions have been implemented to ensure a safe return to school for all students and staff on January 9.

To allow for a final building inspection and any necessary adjustments, the start time for the middle school and elementary school will be delayed by two hours.

The affected areas have undergone thorough cleaning and restoration by ServPro, a professional restoration company. This includes cleaning and restoration of all surfaces, materials, and air quality in the affected areas.

We have collaborated closely with the Johnson City Fire Department, our electrical contractor, our fire alarm and insurance companies, and the local health department to ensure the building is safe for occupancy.

The classroom where the fire occurred is completely sealed off and inaccessible to students and staff. Two adjacent areas will also remain closed this week:

An area directly above the classroom on the third floor.

An adjoining hallway connecting to the cafeteria on the second floor.

Air scrubbing units have been strategically placed throughout the impacted areas and will continue to operate overnight during the restoration process.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to our staff for their exceptional efforts in assisting with the restoration process. We also deeply appreciate the swift and heroic response of the Johnson City Fire Department, including the fire chief and fire marshal. We commend the professionalism and dedication of the ServPro restoration team in handling this situation.

We understand that incidents like this can be unsettling. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and staff. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and make any necessary adjustments to maintain a safe and secure learning environment.

Sincerely,

Eric Race
